Short-Throw Shifter

A B&M Short Throw Shifter is a direct, bolt-on, self-contained unit. When you buy a B&M Short Throw Shifter, along with the complete shifter unit, you get explicit installation instructions. Installation usually takes about 30 minutes with nothing more than ordinary hand tools.

Getrag F23 Identification Location

A B&M Short Throw Shifter offers a dramatic improvement in shifting performance due in large part to reduced shifter travel, or 'shift throw'. Shift throw refers directly to actual physical travel of the shifter stick - thus affecting the time it takes to shift from one gear to another. In a performance situation, the additional seconds (or fractions of a second) a factory stock shifter takes to go from one gear to another can result in slower elapsed times - or just a sluggish feeling when driving around town. A B&M Short Throw Shifter eliminates that sluggish feeling in a daily driver, and gives the racer an extra edge. For the Alero, you want part #45156. This can be purchased at Speed Unlimited, AutoAnything, Summit Racing, and many other automotive outlets.

Flywheel

Fidanza
Fidanza aluminum flywheels are made from the highest quality 6061 T6 aluminum. The material is fantastic for strength, heat dissipation and of course reduction in weight. The friction surface we use is an incredibly strong 1050 steel. The plates are milled to meet our high specifications. A Fidanza flywheel can mate with any type of clutch material, including organic, kevlar, ceramic, metallic and sintered iron. We attach the friction surface with military grade aerospace fasteners. The ring gears we use are also made from 1050 steel and are heat treated for durability. The gears are heated then pressed on and secured with grade 8 button screws. We were the first to utilize a stepped dowel system in most of our flywheel applications. This doweling method ensures that once the pressure plate is installed the dowels cannot be removed because they become locked into place.
Applications:
SPEC flywheels are CNC manufactured at an unheard-of .001 tolerance, in an industry where the standard is .010. This precision manufacturing process ensures perfect balance and a perfectly flat bedding surface for the clutch disc, both of which also contribute to the ultimate in safety for competitive environments. All SPEC flywheels carry SFI certification.

To allow for specific inertia needs, SPEC flywheels are made in high carbon billet steel and aircraft quality billet aluminum. The aluminum and most steel SPEC units are rebuildable and feature a replaceable steel friction plate that is made from a friction- enhancing steel metal specially formulated for optimum clutch bedding and holding power. The aluminum and steel materials provide a light and medium weight option for all types of racing. SPEC spends a lot of time and effort on research and development of optimum flywheel dimensions and weights for all types of driving and racing and can optimize your MOI (moment of inertia) to maximize your car's output and performance.

Shift Kit

The B&M ShiftPlus shift improver kit is one of the most bang for your buck modifications for your transmission. ShiftPlus simply recalibrates your transmission's hydraulic system electronically. The ShiftPlus shift firmness not only makes driving more fun and pleasurable, but slippage and heat are reduced - extending the life of your transmission! Anyone can install a B&M ShiftPlus in minutes with a few simple hand tools. This new design allows you to improve the transmission's shifting performance without removing the transmission pan or valve body. The B&M ShiftPlus electronically enhances shift quality and is adjustable. A simple flip of the switch allows the transmission to operate in the performance mode. Flip it back and you are back to stock! For the Alero, you want part #70380, which can be purchased by most performance automotive retailers, such as Car Customs or Summit Racing.

Limited Slip Differential

The main advantage of a limited slip differential is shown by considering the case of a standard (or 'open') differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate freely—the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels, but will not exceed the threshold of torque needed to move the vehicle, and thus the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. For more demanding use, such as driving in mud, off-road, or for high performance vehicles, such a state of affairs is undesirable, and the LSD can be employed to deal with it. By limiting the angular velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some friction available on at least one of the wheels.

Team Green makes an LSD insert which is designed to distribute the torque/HP to each wheel evenly. The Team Green LSD has been used in many turbocharged, supercharged, and nitrous equipped cars, such as SpeedRacerZ's 420hp/350trq turbocharged LD9, the 550hp/450trq turbocharged Quad 4, TVR's turbocharged 2.2L Ecotec, John Lenko's supercharged and nitrous injected LD9, to name a few.
Will it save the transmission? No. Its sole purpose is to split the horsepower and torque evenly to the drive wheels. Wheel hop will destroy a differential, with or without an insert installed.

Transmission Mount

Getrag f23 service manual transfer switch

Using stiffer mounts than stock or even solid mounts will eliminate or reduce engine roll on acceleration and allow much more horsepower and torque to reach the ground.

Milzy Motorsports designs a more solid mount for the 4T45E/4T40E. This high-quality billet aluminum piece with Delron polyurethane bushing replaces the weak stock transmission mount to eliminate engine movement, resulting in less power and torque loss to the wheels, stiffer shifts, and a more solid feel for the car. Available in natural finish or polished. Mount comes with the necessary grade 10.9 longer bolts. This works on either automatic transmissions for the Alero as they both use the same mount.
Manufactures a tranny mount for the 4T45E/4T40E as well. Manufactured from billet aluminum with poly insert - direct bolt-on to prevent loss of torque due to engine drivetrain movement. Available here.

4-speed 4T45-E Automatic

The 'MN5' 4T45E is able to handle vehicles up to 4500 lb (2041 kg) GVWR. Final drive ratios include 3.63, 3.29, 3.05, and 3.91. This same transmission is used in the Saturn Vue Green Line hybrid vehicle with the addition of an auxiliary oil pump and hybrid-aware electronics. It is designed for 3.0–3.4 L engines producing up to 205 ft·lbf (278 N·m) of torque.

mine always takes 1.8 then starts coming out of the fill hole. i see a lot of people filling it from the red cap on the top. isnt that just a vent and you are supposed to fill it from the hole in the side until it flows out?
and im going from mobil 1 ATF, to Syncromesh. I know it says ATF in the manual but a lot of people I talked to said the synchromesh will work great regardless.

The TSB says to use the red fill cap so you can overfill the transmission.

what i am reading on that link is that you use the plug next to the red vent cap...
6. Remove the fill plug located on the top/middle of transmission on the driver side, near the red vent cap. If you use the check level plug on the side of the transmission, you will not be able to overfill the transmission.
7. Fill the transmission with 2.4L (2.6 qts) of Saturn Manual Transmission Lubricant P/N 21018899. DO NOT USE THE RED VENT CAP TO FILL.
8. Re-install the fill plug. Tighten
Tighten the fill plug to 38 N·m(28 lb ft).
but i for one have never had the grinding or noise and id say i squeeze 1.9-2.0 qt into it through the fill hole since i squeeze all i can as its running out and then cap it asap. only problem i had was at about 90K miles... bad 5th gear synchro and bad 2nd gear, but that was my fault from drag racing.
