Conversely, 3:10 to Yuma is a tale about Wade’s burgeoning recognition of the wild, robust, creative, and Dionysian aspect of the good, represented by the rancher’s “reckless” forfeiture of his own life in the name of justice. It is precisely this Dionysian aspect of moral goodness that all of the morally mediocre society—the petit. A horseman encircles the barn of this homestead, unhooking a 3 corral, letting loose a herd of cattle. Last night, the Boston press corps was treated to the nation’s first screening of the recently completed 3:10 to Yuma (minus credits), the James Mangold-directed western starring Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Ben Foster, and Peter Fonda. We were joined at the theater near Fenway Park by Fonda, who sat one seat in front of me, and Foster, a few seats to his right, both of whom were also seeing a finished cut for the first time. (I had an opportunity to interview both this morning, so expect a post soon.)

“Yuma” previewed at Comic-Con
Yesterday afternoon at Comic-Con in San Diego, Lionsgate put on a Special Preview Panel for 3:10 to Yuma with clips from the movie. Peter Fonda and Ben Foster led a discussion with the topic heading, “A modern take on the classic western.”

George Gregan is Coming

He’s battled injury, defeat and a coterie of critics but, writes Mark Chipperfield, George Gregan is back for one last shot at World Cup glory.
Ask George Gregan, international sporting legend, millionaire cafe owner and the curse of referees everywhere, about rugby and the answers are polite, carefully considered and formulaic. But turn the conversation to American crime writer Elmore Leonard - his favourite author - and Gregan’s sphinx-like expression melts into a boyish smile. “The book of his I really love is Valdez Is Coming, which was turned into a movie starring Burt Lancaster,” he explains with sudden animation. “There are two people inside Bob Valdez, the hero of the book, and I think most of us are like that, especially in what we do - everyone sees the public side but only those close to you see the private side.”
Gregan’s choice of literary hero is intriguing. Bob Valdez - “hard looking with a dark hard face” - is a respectable town constable until he is tricked into killing an innocent man. In response, he methodically tracks down and executes his enemies. By the end of the novel, the quietly spoken outsider has become a man of destiny in the classic Western tradition.
George Musarurwa (“the chosen one”) Gregan is likewise on a personal quest and one that he approaches with equal solemnity. His mission? To play for Australia at the 2007 World Cup in France - his last tilt at the trophy Australia won in 1999 but relinquished to England (thanks to the boot of Jonny Wilkinson) four years later. Like Valdez, Gregan feels betrayed and is out for revenge - or at least his rightful place in the sun.

3:10 to Yuma Poster
Finally, Lionsgate released the poster for 3:10 to Yuma. Don’t look for it on a movie tie-in edition. Lionsgate’s last minute artwork effectively eliminated any possibility that the publisher would have time to print a new edition of 3:10 to Yuma and other Western Stories featuring this posterior gunman waiting for the train, or is he going to rob it?. It’s a shame because it would have honored Elmore’s work, the foundation for the movie which bears little resemblance to his story.

Elmore at Madonna U.
Elmore was the guest speaker Thursday night at PAH-Fest Motown at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan. PAH-fest which stands for Project Access Hollywood is the brainchild of Christopher Coppola (pictured above with Elmore), nephew of Francis Ford Coppola and Talia Shire (who he says is a big fan) and brother of Nick Cage.
PAH-Fest is described at its website as “a new kind of digital media festival that celebrates the stories and voices of everyday people. PAH-Fest invites people from all walks of life to tell their digital stories using today’s latest technology and pro-sumer equipment.”
Elmore attended a screening of Out of Sight and then spoke for almost an hour. He shared some anecdotes about the making of the movie and sequed into a detailed description of the book he is writing now, Foley’s Back, which reprises the Out of Sight character, Jack Foley, Cundo Rey from LaBrava and Dawn Navarro from Riding the Rap. He recited a few of his rules and took questions from the audience.

1985 and 1986 were the years that The Cannon Group expanded their productions from small indie hits (Breakin’) to shows with big name talent. Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus would attend film festivals and put together deals on a napkin & handshake basis, out of which came a number of interesting pictures by directors like Anthony Harvey, Nicolas Roeg and Andre Konchalovsky. 52 Pick-Up brought in once-hot director John Frankenheimer to guide a script by Elmore Leonard, a now much better appreciated author. Reasonably well produced on Los Angeles locations, 52 Pick-Up puts Roy Scheider and Ann-Margret at the center of an exceedingly nasty murder/blackmail plot that never quite comes together
